About Wahkohtowin Healing Centre

The Wahkohtowin Healing Centre is an Indigenous-led health and wellness centre dedicated to holistic healing, cultural revitalization, and community well-being. Rooted in the Cree concept of Wahkohtowin—which means kinship, interconnectedness, and relationships—the centre integrates traditional Indigenous healing practices with modern healthcare to support physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness. It offers a wide range of culturally safe services, including Elder-guided healing circles, mental health counselling, Indigenous midwifery, land-based wellness programs, harm reduction support, and chronic disease care. The centre is a space for reconnection with culture through language, ceremony, and teachings, while also addressing the urgent needs of the community through housing support, family wellness programs, and food security initiatives. Wahkohtowin Healing Centre is more than just a health service—it is a home for healing, empowerment, and cultural strength, ensuring that Indigenous individuals and families have access to compassionate, trauma-informed, and community-driven care.

History of Wahkohtowin Healing Centre

The Wahkohtowin Healing Centre was founded on the belief that health is interconnected with community, culture, and the land. The word Wahkohtowin (ᐘᐦᑯᐦᑐᐏᐣ), meaning kinship and interconnectedness, reflects the core values of this centre: healing through relationships, culture, and collective care.

Origins & Inspiration

The idea for the centre was born out of a growing need for Indigenous-led health services in Manitoba, particularly in areas without dedicated spaces for culturally safe and holistic healing. Recognizing the impact of historical trauma, intergenerational impacts of colonization, and systemic barriers to healthcare, the centre was established to provide a safe, welcoming space for Indigenous individuals and families to heal, thrive, and reconnect with their cultural identities

Community-Driven Approach

Wahkohtowin Healing Centre was built by the community, for the community. From the beginning, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, healthcare professionals, and grassroots organizers came together to shape a vision for a place where:

  • Traditional and contemporary healing methods work together

  • Cultural identity is strengthened through language, ceremony, and teachings

  • Holistic wellness (physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual) is at the heart of care

  • No one is turned away, ensuring access for all who need support

Establishment & Growth

In its early days, Wahkohtowin Healing Centre started with small healing circles, land-based gatherings, and community-driven workshops. With growing demand, it expanded to offer mental health counselling, harm reduction programs, Indigenous midwifery services, and holistic wellness programs

Today, Wahkohtowin Healing Centre stands as a pillar of healing and empowerment, with a commitment to

  • Honoring Indigenous ways of knowing and healing

  • Supporting Indigenous families and youth

  • Providing trauma-informed and culturally safe care

  • Building stronger, healthier communities for future generations
