About the Role
Wahkohtowin Healing Centre is seeking a Policy and Strategic Lead to provide visionary leadership, policy development, and strategic direction to support our mission of culturally grounded healing and wellness. The successful candidate will play a critical role in advancing Indigenous health policy, securing funding, building partnerships, and ensuring alignment with community needs and values.
This role requires a deep understanding of Indigenous governance, health policy, and community-led advocacy, along with strong skills in policy writing, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement.

Key Responsibilities
Policy Development and Advocacy

Lead the development of policies and frameworks that support Indigenous-led health and wellness services

Advocate for policy changes that improve access to culturally safe healthcare for Indigenous communities

Ensure that all policies align with Indigenous rights, self-determination, and holistic wellness principles

Conduct research and analyze government legislation, funding structures, and Indigenous health trends

Strategic Planning and Organizational Development

Develop and implement a strategic vision and long-term plans for Wahkohtowin Healing Centre
-
Work closely with the Executive Director and Leadership Team to ensure policies and strategies align with the Centre’s mission

Identify funding opportunities, partnerships, and policy gaps to enhance service delivery

Support the growth and sustainability of Wahkohtowin Healing Centre through evidence-based planning

Partnerships and Stakeholder Engagement

Build and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous communities, government agencies, funders, and advocacy groups

Represent Wahkohtowin Healing Centre in policy discussions, conferences, and intergovernmental meetings

Work collaboratively with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to ensure policies reflect Indigenous perspectives and priorities

Research, Evaluation and Reporting

Oversee program evaluation and impact assessment to inform policy decisions

Develop reports, policy briefs, and strategic documents to communicate key findings and recommendations

Ensure policies are culturally appropriate, evidence-based, and driven by community needs

Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor's degree in a related field required

Strong understanding of Indigenous governance, self-determination, and policy-making processes

Experience in policy development, strategic planning, or health advocacy, ideally in an Indigenous or non-profit setting

Familiarity with Indigenous health, social determinants of health, and holistic wellness approaches

Experience working directly with Indigenous communities, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers
-
Strong research, writing, and communication skills, with the ability to create policy briefs, reports, and funding proposals

Knowledge of funding structures, government relations, and Indigenous rights frameworks
-
Ability to manage multiple projects, work collaboratively, and engage in community-based decision-making
